A huge number of people turned up to this year’s Australia Day celebration at the Quorn pool.
It was estimated that over 170 people attended, which is almost double that of last year’s turnout of around 100, according to Julie Campbell, of the Flinders Ranges Council.
“We haven’t had this many people in years,” said Mrs Campbell.
It was a challenge to find a seat, despite the extra tables put out by the council, and the 150 plates was still not enough.
Fortunately the Lions’ Club saw that at least everyone got a feed.
Lou Walker, who last year received a Certificate of Recognition from the council, gave the Australia Day Address.
He spoke of Australia Day being a
celebration of the people who have made our country the great place it is.
A presentation was then made to Andrea Bury, Citizen of the Year for 2010. In addition to owning a
hairdressing business, which employs students as well as locals, Ms Bury is a life member of the Quorn Netball
Club, and involved in other sporting clubs in the town, as are her three
children.
She also has been supportive of other community events.
Ms Bury was chosen, however, for her commitment to the Christmas Street Party, which has now been going for 10 years.
The one year that the Christmas Street Party didn’t occur – due to lack of insurance – it just didn’t feel like Christmas without it.
Ms Bury said the Christmas party was conceived with friends one Friday night at the salon, and she acknowledged the support of her friends each year as she is ‘tearing her hair out’ as Christmas draws near.
