The Book Week Parade, marking the end of the Premier’s Reading Challenge for another year, saw a great deal of imagination regarding costumes on the part of children involved as they dressed in all manner of guises, inspired by their favourite characters from books, films or sport.
There were pirates from the Caribbean, Cinderellas, footballers, unicorns, ?Jesse the Cowgirl? from ?Toy Story 2? and many others.
Principal of St Joseph’s School Sister Julianne Murphy said about 150 children from St Joseph’s, Terowie Rural School, Peterborough Pre-School, Primary and High Schools took part.
One of the conditions, agreed to by all schools, was that only students completing the Challenge would take part. Sister Julianne said that all schools had noticed a marked improvement in reading skills since the Challenge?s inception.
Assembling at Rotary Park and escorted by police, the students marched up the Main Street to the Tourist carriage, under the admiring eyes of parents, grandparents and friends. Following the parade, students returned to their own schools for a sausage sizzle and cold drink. Terowie students and staff joined St Joseph’s before returning home.
