Not only the were the Year 12 students of 2009 from Booleroo Centre District School anxiously awaiting final results and offers from universities, TAFE and employers during the school holidays, their teachers were, too.
A number of teachers gathered when the results were released and they celebrated as much as their students and their families.
The 2009 results surpassed all expectations and placed BCDS students among the highest achievers in the State.
Twelve Merit Awards for perfect scores of 20 out of 20 were achieved - this amounts to 10 percent of all the grades!
"Many of our students were seeking entry into university and TAFE courses, and their Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) was just as important as their individual subject results,” said Acting Deputy Principal Fil Nogueira.
The TER (out of 100) ranks students from across the State based on their Year 12 results, and is used to determine entry into tertiary courses.
Melissa Brown achieved the highest TER of the school, an impressive 97.9, which placed her in the top two percent of all students in the State.
Five other BCDS students achieved TER above 90, putting them in the top
10 percent of the almost 18,000 students who undertook Stage 2 of SACE last year.
They were Jamie-Lee Hannigan, Kieran Borgas, Nicole Christophersen, Elysse Robinson and Kelsea Kurtzer.
With results like these, and indeed those of all the 2009 Year 12 students, it was no surprise that nearly all were accepted into their first preference courses at uni and TAFE.
These covered a wide range of tertiary courses commencing in 2010 as follows: Tarryn Battersby - Bachelor of Science (Animal Science), Uni of Adelaide; Kieran Borgas - Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Uni of SA; Robert Britza - Bachelor of Engineering, Uni of SA; Nicole Christophersen - Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) - Uni of Adelaide; Melissa Brown - Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) -
Uni of SA; Tom George and Jamie-Lee Hannigan - both Bachelor of
Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging), Uni of SA; Emma Knight - Bachelor of Public Relations - Uni
of SA; Sam Kupke - Bachelor of Engineering - Uni of Adelaide; Kelsea Kurtzer - Double Degree, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Structural) -
Uni of Adelaide; Sam Reichstein - Bachelor of Commerce, Uni of
Adelaide; Luci Robertson and
Katelyn Spaeth - both Bachelor of Nursing - Uni of SA; and Elysse Robinson - Bachelor of Speech Pathology - Flinders Uni.
Many Year 11 and 12 students are pursuing employment and apprenticeship opportunities as well.
Barbara Zanker and Gabi Aistrope have Administration Traineeships at Mount Remarkable and Port Augusta Councils respectively; Tyson Battersby, Ashley Scutcheon, Liam Bury and Jed Walter are beginning apprenticeships; Luci Robertson beginning a Dental Nursing Traineeship; Adrian Christie, Thomas Bury and Evan Kirkham have joined the workforce and Guillaume Kruger is awaiting notification of
acceptance into the South Australian Police Force.
It is certainly pleasing to be able to see such positive future pathways for so many students from a small rural school.
