The cold and wet weather could not deter about 90 people, many of them children, from attending the Port Germein Anzac Day Dawn Service.
A shaft of light poignantly highlighted the poem inscribed on the base of the War Memorial. It reads:
They watched the tall ships come and go,
They walked the hills and the gulleys,
They worked the farmlands and the gardens,
They laughed and they played in these streets in this the place of their childhood,
We will remember them.
The Port Germein Service was organised by the Port Pirie Returned Services League Club and conducted by the Salvation Army.
The service was supported by Port Germein’s Marg Johns who led the singing of the national anthem.
Don Deed played the Last Post and Reveille on his bugle.
Wreaths were laid by Lou Tolosa, RSL Port Germein’s only surviving foundation member, Cr Bill Hodgson from the District Council of Mount Remarkable and Thomas
Pole on behalf of the youth,
Port Germein Progress Association and the community of Port Germein.
Thanks were given to the Port Germein volunteers who prepared the grounds for the solemn day.
