After hosting the Santos Tour Down Under for the second time, the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council has launched a bid to see the event return again in 2013.
Thousands of people flocked along the route to see the international cycling event in Clare this year, and council chief Roy Blight said stage one was a huge success.
“The event brings a lot of outside people to the region,” he said.
“When I was at our opening stage, I met people from Germany and the United Kingdom.”
Mr Blight said the crowd numbers in Clare this year were higher than those in 2010, and they hoped to capitalize on the improvements.
“The Tour Down Under has had a significant economic impact on the region,” he said.
“Local business operators said they would like to have it here every year.”
The cycling event is synonymous with what the council offers with tourism experience. “We have a strong brand of cycling here,” Mr Blight said.
“The Clare Valley brand has a strong image overseas. We think we have got a few hidden talents.”
The council’s response from the South Australian Tourism Commission has been very positive, and in both 2010 and this year, they have been pleased with the council’s participation.
When choosing participating towns, Mr Blight said the commission looked for towns that engage with the tour.
“Each of our towns put on something special this year,” he said.
”We have only ever had positive feedback from the commission.”
All towns involved with the Tour Down Under have to be no more than 1.5 hours from Adelaide. The race routes for 2013 will officially be announced in July this year.
