Local Clare businesses will open their doors to students and community members to expose career pathways and opportunities available within their industry.
Barossa Lower North Futures in partnership with the Mid North Regional Development Board, funded through SA Works, will facilitate the inaugural Mid North Careers Exposed on Wednesday June 3, 2009.
The Valleys Lifestyle Leisure Centre, TAFE SA and the Edwards Mall will be a hub of activity and buses will ferry participants to on-site visits of participating local industry.
Yvonne Cloke, Barossa Lower North Futures executive officer, said, “this is the first Expo of this kind in our region and the positive response from local employers / businesses has been overwhelming.”
“Not all career pathways have been covered in this our first expo as this is a pilot and we are starting small.”
“If we are fortunate to secure funding again in 2010 we will definitely expand on the career pathways.”
Targeted students from six local secondary schools who will benefit from exploring these career pathways, will be invited to register to attend.
“Those unemployed or underemployed, those seeking a career change and parents returning to work will benefit from attending this careers expo and community registration forms are available now,” Mrs Cloke said.
Career Pathways include:
*Aged care, nursing, childcare, kindergarten
*Agriculture, horticulture, rural management, Elders, Green Corps
*Architecture, artist, graphic design, photography
*Automotive, diesel mechanic, crash repair, engineering, manufacturing
*Building trades (electrical, building, plumbing)
*Business admin, finance, public sector traineeships
*Civil Construction
*Emergency Services (SES, CFS, St John)
*Fitness industry
*Hair and beauty
*Hospitality, retail, travel, tourism
More information is available on each of these pathways in the registration booklet.
As an added bonus Barossa Lower North Futures have been fortunate to be able to engage the Tanya Powell Agency to deliver four key job readiness workshops.
This agency no longer facilitates country workshops with all of their training based on-site in Adelaide.
“To have been able to offer these very professional workshops to students and community members in our region is an absolute privilege and an opportunity not to be missed,” Mrs Cloke said.
Adelaide City Council will also visit the region on Wednesday, June 3, to facilitate information sessions for Year 12 students intending to locate to Adelaide for work or study. Sessions will include what is unique about Adelaide, accommodation options, transport, money matters, student friendly shopping, having fun and orientation in the city.
This will also be a very valuable session for gap year students, apprentices who do blocks of study in Adelaide and parents who have a child intending to study or work in Adelaide.
Many parents have commented after attending these sessions, “I wish I had heard this before my child went to Adelaide, I would have saved a fortune!”
Adelaide City Council will facilitate an information session for the community at TAFE SA Clare from 12.00 – 12.45pm.
Information booklets and registration forms are available from the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council, Valley’s Lifestyle Leisure Centre, Mid North Regional Development Board and Barossa Lower North Futures.
“We gratefully acknowledge the significant support given to us by the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council, TAFE SA Clare campus and the various local businesses. Without their support we would not be able to facilitate such an exciting and innovative event,” Mrs Cloke said.
