The fate of the original Port Broughton council office will be decided at the District Council of Barunga West council meeting next week.
The proposed extension of the new Port Broughton council office would include the demolition of the original chambers, built in 1895.
After many letters of concern and a petition, which included 350 signatures against the demolition the council voted at last month’s meeting that the building would be demolished.
The demolition of the building would be of great concern to members of the community if it was simply to become a memory.
The historic building is also listed as a site to visit in the Walk Around Town Tourist Guide.
In the hope of a solution outraged residents of Port Broughton flocked to the remaining building to protest their anger against the decision made by the council.
More than 100 people were present at the protest on the May 1. Port Broughton Citizen of the Year 2009, Grace Aitchison, thought that the day was a great success.
Mrs Aitchinson stressed that her views as well as concerned members of the community were not listened to.
“Addressed to the council were 23 letters of disapproval of the demolition and five in favor,” she said.
“These figures are questionable as to whether the community’s views were seriously considered.”
Those opposed to the council’s decision feel that if the building is demolished they will be losing part of Port Broughton. Mayor Dean Dolling said that the issue would be re-visited at the upcoming council meeting and voted on.
“There might be way to save the building but if it is not demollished there will be a cost to ratepayers,” he said.
“It would cost $50,000 plus the upkeep costs.”
Mr Dolling said there was a proposal to extend the building to the footpath and that the decision at the council meeting will be final.
“As a council we try to make the best decision for the community,” he said.
Mr Dolling said the submission of a petition and protest against the demolition was not directly involved with the council’s decision to re-visit the issue.
