Historic day as Appila remembers

07 May, 2009 02:27 PM
Appila has not had an Anzac Day Dawn Service for many years, with some people believing that this year was the first to be held in the town.

There were more than 60 people who attended the service at the Appila Memorial Hall.

Ian Shields conducted the service which included the story of how his father was one of the first 500 hundred soldiers to land at Gallipoli.

Greg Harvie played the Last Post and the Rouse on his trumpet, which was very moving and a highlight of the service. The flag was raised by Barry Harvie.

After the ceremony everyone gathered for a cooked breakfast in the hall and many stayed for a few hours to catch up with people they had not seen for a long time.
