Vehicles came from thousands of kilometres away for the Northern Drag and Motoring Association’s second annual motor show, with motoring enthusiasts making the trip from Alice Springs, Mildura and Nhill.
Organiser Angela Corbett said the standard of the entries had really improved from the year before, with judges in some categories finding it hard to decide on a winner.
Kevin Schwab, who took out the prize of motor show grand champion, was one of the many entrants who restored their vehicles just for the motor show.
However he said he was surprised and delighted to see his 1965 white Ford Mustang Coupe win the most overall points with the judges.
“I’ve been building it for about eight years and I was determined to get it here, we were up to the last moment,” he said.
In a day marked by sunshine and clear skies, there were plenty of sights and events to keep punters entertained.
The Jet Car was a favourite – and local residents reported hearing it as far away as Stirling North.
Motorbike stunt man Adrian Harry along with Darren Morgan and his ground-thumping start-ups, also impressed.
Children were kept happy by an appearance by former Adelaide Crow’s captain Mark Ricciuto, while there was a jumping castle, bucking ball, side-show games and face-painting were also top attractions.
The event formed part of an NDMA fundraising effort to get a family-friendly motor sport complex built in Port Augusta.
Ms Corbett said the complex would include a go-cart circuit, drag strip and circuit racing.
“This year we’re looking to source and acquire land (for the development),” she said
As to whether Port Augusta should expect a motor show next year - this subject is still up in the air.
“That’s the big question,” Ms Corbett said. “There will be another one but whether it’s next year I don’t know.”
