Cricket season in full swing after rocky start

03 Dec, 2009 12:43 PM

When Saturday games got underway it was very windy with all three games facing threatening weather conditions.

With the first two weeks of the season being called off because of heat and rain, to finally get things underway was certainly a relief for everyone involved.

Ironically, this coming weekend there isn’t any Rocky River cricket being played.

Not because of any weather conditions but because of the Test Match at Adelaide Oval that goes from Friday to Tuesday (if it lasts that long).

Games are programmed to give all the players a chance to head down to see some international cricket.

In Saturday’s games Gladstone had a great win over last year’s champs.

With both teams missing a couple of regular players due to unavailablity, Gladstone batted first and made a reasonable

total of 8 for 158 with Laura only being only to manage 57 in reply.

Edson, Foulis and Fuller were the main destroyers with the ball.

Fuller had an interesting day, driving from Port Augusta to play as a fill in, getting run-out for a diamond duck (without facing a ball) and bowling three wides in his first over (missing the pitch) and then getting three wickets in his next!

In other games, Wirrabara/ Murraytown put their ordinary Superleague form behind them to record an easy win over Redhill at Redhill.

The victorious side only had a total of 10 players on the day.

And finally, a fantastic individual performance by Crystal Brook’.

Steve Merkel got the win for the home side against Georgetown, with the Brookie veteran capturing 6 for 35, which included a hat-trick.

He also was the topscoring player for his team with a 34 valuable runs in what turned out to be the match of the round.

The highlight of Georgetown’s innings was the well-compiled 76 runs made by Brett Ballantyne who batted through the innings and was last man out.

A total of 76 in a team total of 110 is quite outstanding.
