Crystal Brook was packed to the limit as sport enthusiasts came to watch Northern Areas grand finals.
The town played host to netball and football on Saturday – and joyously celebrated a double triumph with premierships in both sports. In fact, the netball title was the first in the club’s 55-year involvement in the Northern Areas Netball Association.
With 7000 spectators, popular does not begin to describe the excitement of the day. Crystal Brook and Southern Flinders contested the A grade grand final with the Roosters winning.
But some praise must go to the Tigers after a tumultuous season that saw the team change coaches when Lyndon Prior stepped down following the death of his wife.
The team managed to make it to the finals coached by Scott Brand and president of the Northern Areas Football Association Graham McKay said “they have performed so well after having to appoint a coach so quickly”.
He also said the last season was one of the most successful seasons the area has ever seen. Coach of Crystal Brook Greg Irvine said: “The day turned out really well for us - an excellent turnout and a good crowd.
“Southern Flinders did extremely well and gave us a run for our money.”
Netballers from Crystal Brook are probably still celebrating their first victory, ever.
The team defeated Broughton-Mundoora in an epic match.
Records show the NANA has existed since 1953 and, after a 55-year dry spell for the team, they certainly had something to celebrate.
There must be something in the water at Crystal Brook because all up they won five netball finals and A grade football and senior colts.
Netball association president Trudie Kitschke said: “We are immensely proud of Crystal Brook for their first win. “
She said of the team having a celebration for their win, “I am glad I left Crystal Brook early” and that they would have had quite a party.
