Lions take down the Magpies in one-point thriller

20 May, 2009 12:24 PM
BMW 6-13 (49) d Jamestown-Peterborough 7-6 (48)

BMW managed to hold off a fast finishing Jamestown-Peterborough to record an important win in the match played at Victoria Park.

The Magpies started the game well and led by two goals at the first change of ends.

BMW then dominated the second term kicking 4-4 whilst keeping their opposition scoreless.

In the final result it was this excellent term of footy that allowed the Lions to take the match.

In the second half the Magpies fought back to only trail by five points at three-quarter time.

The final term was a really torrid affair with goals almost impossible to score in the wet and slippery conditions.

BMW managed to hang on despite the Pies having the majority of the play in their forward line.

Best for BMW was tough and reliable Dylan McCallum, Simon George in the midfield and up forward, Kendrick McCallum, Matt Foulis and Jason Speed.

Best for the Magpies was captain Chris Stacey who kicked four valuable goals to be the leading forward on the ground.

Bernie McInerney, Matt Gale across half back, David Boulton was superb in conditions that really suited him and Scott Mescke controlled the ruck.

Southern Flinders 11-5 (71) d Crystal Brook 8-8 (56)

In a rematch of last year’s grand final Southern Flinders continued on their unbeaten run with a hard fought 15-point win over Crystal Brook.

The Tigers got the jump on the Roosters in the first term and led by three goals at quarter time.

It proved to be a very difficult margin for the Roosters to draw back and they trailed by two or three goals for the rest of the match before finally going down by 15 points.

Best for Southern Flinders was veteran John McKenna, youngster Brett Ballantyne, defender Jeremy Edson, Scott Mazzone, Cody Turner and Matt Woolford.

Michael Gaunt kicked five goals and Matt Woolford and Rhys Stanbridge two goals each.

Jack Cousins was once again a standout for Crystal Brook. His three goals and numerous possessions went a long way towards keeping his side in the match. Adam Noonan in the ruck, defenders Matt Jackman and Matt Coates and Nathan Lambert were others to make the list.

Broughton-Mundoora 15-12 (102) d Orroroo 5-8 (38)

In took almost a half of footy for Broughton-Mundoora to shake off a determined Orroroo and run away with a comfortable 64-point win.

Orroroo failed to kick a goal at half time whilst the Eagles slammed on nine to continue their recent run of good form.

Best for the Eagles was Nick Hewett, with two goals, who was in everything.

Brady Puddy in his best game since coming to the Eagles, Nick Edwards, Chris Elliot and Tom Button scored three goals.

Josh McCallum and Daniel Baker each kicked two goals.

Best for the Roos were Matt Anesbury, Josh Clark, James Reddaway, Damien Ellery and Jonathon Bowman. Justin Duffy kicked two goals.

Round Six Preview, Saturday May 23

Jamestown-Peterborough versus Orroroo at Jamestown. Both sides badly need a win so expect a spirited performance from all players involved.

The class of Stacey, Schuppan and Farr should be enough to get the Pies over the line.

Tip – Jamestown-Peterborough by three goals.

BMW v Southern Flinders at Wilmington.

Southern Flinders are flying at the moment and I don’t expect BMW to cause them too many problems.

The Lions have some injury concerns with Lachie McCallum, Andrew Milne and Cameron McCallum to name a few.

Tip – Southern Flinders by five goals.

Broughton-Mundoora versus Crystal Brook at Mundoora.

This should be a fantastic game between the young exciting Eagles and the classy experienced Roosters.

I expect the young Eagles legs to get them over the line in the end.

Tip – Broughton-Mundoora by seven points.
