ANNIVERSARY: Booleroo Centre couple Gwen and Bill Arthur celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.

Bill and Gwen Arthur, of Booleroo Centre, have been inundated with well wishes after celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary recently.

They met at a local dance in Booleroo Centre on Gwen’s 17th birthday and were married five years later on April 17, 1943 at the Booleroo Centre Methodist Church at 9:30 in the morning.

Gwen wore a lace over taffeta gown, made by her sister Dulcie.

The gown had a long train and a veil with orange blossom flowers in the headpiece.

She carried gladiolus flowers, and Gwen still has this gown today.

Her attendants were her sisters Dulcie as bridesmaid and Netta as flower girl, who wore blue.

Bill wore a navy suit and had his brother Tom Arthur as best man.

Gwen received a horseshoe on her arm from her nephew Darryl Thiselton, whose dad was away at the war.

The wedding breakfast was held at the Booleroo Centre Hotel parlour with sandwiches, a cup of tea and a two tier wedding cake, all the way from Adelaide.

Bill and Gwen got a quick getaway for their honeymoon as the rail car left Booleroo Centre railway station at 11am for Gladstone.

Bill collected the luggage to catch the train to go onto Adelaide and found several old smelly boots tied to their cases – a send-off good luck joke.

A week spent at the Grosvenor with a trip to the trots at Strathalbyn was enjoyed.

Bill and Gwen have been blessed with many years together and have raised two children, Ian born in 1947 and Wendy in 1950.

They have seen many changes working on the farm outside Booleroo Centre from horse teams to tractor, riding in a jinker being pulled by their horse trotter “Matchwood’, to riding in a car as well as sheathes of hay to bales.

There was also early frosty mornings training trotters, milking cows, planting crops of wheat, hunting for rabbits with Bill’s pet dogs and finding time to play sport such as tennis, Cricket and following football for many years.

Bill now resides at Booleroo Centre Hospital and Gwen visits everyday, driving herself to see him and spending all day by his side.

She does tatting and produces some outstanding pieces of work.

They enjoy visits from family and so love to watch their great-grandchildren play.

This couple are amazing at 96 and 97, they are truly blessed to have each other as we are to still have them in the small town of Booleroo Centre.

We wish them many more happy days ahead as they share their life memories with us.
