Mountain bikers get ‘Pumpt’ for a long weekend at the Melrose Fat Tyre Festival

Mountain bike devotees will be heading to the Flinders Ranges this June long weekend to participate in the fun and festivities at the Melrose Fat Tyre Festival.

Melrose is home to some of the best mountain bike trails in South Australia.

With approximately 100km of single trail tracks in the foothills of Mount Remarkable and surrounding areas, the event gives participants the opportunity to ride tracks only opened for the Festival.

Now in its 16th year mountain bike devotees flock to this annual event. Steve Vicino, a regular Festival participant, said there is nothing like the Fat Tyre Festival.

“I have been participating in this event for many years and it never disappoints. The mountain bike tracks are second to none, the atmosphere is awesome and the entertainment and activities will keep you happy all weekend,” he said.

The Fat Tyre Festival is all about bringing the family away for three days of mountain biking, fresh air, food, music and entertainment.

In 2018 a new concept is being introduced; The Spitwater & Pumpt Fat Tyre Festival Village.

Event Manager Natacha Costa came up with the idea and said it will be a place with a great atmosphere for participants and their families to enjoy between cycling events

“The village will be in the Melrose Museum grounds - giving it that central meeting spot like the Tour Down Under,” Natacha said.

“This will be a hub for entertainment over the weekend including a Pumpt halfpipe, Kiddimotto inflatable kids cycle track, petting zoo, market stalls, live music by local performers and food vans.”

Supported by the South Australian Tourism Commission, the Festival brings participants from South Australia and interstate and shines a spotlight on the Mid North.

Whether you ride a bike or not, Melrose’s Fat Tyre Festival has something for you to enjoy.
