A Broughton Plains man has set out to collect a pictorial history of his district.

Jack Keain already has dozens of photographs dating back many years, but he needs more for his planned collection at the local museum.

His collection so far includes:

*The old Wandearah Post Office which was in an International Harvester farm machinery shed.

*Mr Davidson who ran a cattle stud in the district.

*The curved wharf at Port Pirie during World War II.

*Pilots, planes and fuel drums at the Bombing and Gunnery School run by the Royal Australian Air Force at Port Pirie in the war.

*Mr Keain’s great great grandmother Ellen Griffiths who migrated from Ireland in 1940 at the age of 12 years old.

*The first car in the district.

Mr Keain is chairman of the Broughton Plains Heritage Society which hopes to keep the photographs in its museum at Wandearah.

He has already hosted photograph nights where, he says, people can discuss and argue about the images.

“It is a work in progress. We will get more photographs as time goes on,” he said.

“It is better to do it like this. They will be in one central place and they will be there forever, hopefully.

“A lot of people don’t know what to do with their photographs .. it would be good to have a record in our museum.” He said he was seeking images from the entire Broughton Plains area comprising Wandearah, Pirie East, Nurom, Lower Broughton, Port Davis and Butler Bridge.

“You just don’t know what is going to turn up with a project like this,” he said.
