With the Australian Dental Association’s (ADA) annual Dental Health Week upon us (August 6-12), oral health is in the spotlight.
The ever-increasing commitments for individuals is a strong influencing factor for general health needs being treated as a second priority in some cases.
‘Watch your Mouth’ is this year’s theme and is a timely reminder that it is important to look after not just your teeth, not just your gums, but your whole mouth.
Research highlighted by the ADA shows for instance that 65 per cent of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years, that just under 50 per cent of Australians only brush their teeth once a day, nearly 40 per cent never floss or clean in-between their teeth and three in four young people (aged 14-18 years) are consuming too much sugar.

The four oral health basics are:
- Brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
- Clean in-between teeth once a day (with floss)
- Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake
- Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups (twice yearly). Prevention is better than the cure.
