Caltowie capitalises on form to win shield

With the season at a close we look back on the achievements of the Jamestown Table Tennis Association. The B Grade went from a six-player per team competition to a four-player per team competition. This has been welcomed by players and has made for a fierce competition. June 29 saw Port Augusta Table Tennis Association travel to Jamestown to defend their title. The night saw four divisions with four players in each team. This consisted of each division playing two singles and two doubles. Jamestown had a successful night winning each division.

Although the scores do not reflect there were some close games throughout the night. 

The weekend of July 7 and 8, Jamestown held the annual Open Tournament. The open saw some of the state’s leading players including former Olympian Paul Langley. The weekend started early Saturday morning with commencement of the doubles with the singles commencing later in the day. 

The John Crawford Memorial trophy was presented by Mal Harding, the patron of the association, to the Open Men’s Champion Paul Langley. Paul defeated Paul Glassenbury in a competitive match. The Val Lloyd Memorial trophy was also presented by Mal Harding to the Open Women’s Champion Claire Langley. Claire defeated Chris Matthews in a tough battle. Sunday saw the commencement of the aged events with both singles and doubles played. Brothers Kevin and David Malyschko who have attended the Open since the first open held, defeated Paul Langley and Paul Glassenbury. 

The closed tournament was a success once again. The night began with the knock out round. Congratulations to Zac Aspinall on winning the flower pot. The first night saw the rounds played to allow for the finals to be played on the final night. There were some close matches throughout the competition with some results coming down to the fifth set. 

Champ Singles Div. 1 top half – Klingner, David. Champ Singles Div. 1 bottom half – Schulz, Andrew. Champ Singles Div 2 top half – McKay, Ashley. Champ Singles Div. 2 bottom half – Campbell, Tom. Handicap Singles – Klingner, Charlie. Division 1 Doubles – Klingner, David, and Hagger, John. Division 2 Doubles – McKay, Ashley, and Schulz, Trevor. Potluck Doubles – Crawford, Damon, and Jacka, Joseph. Handicap Doubles – Schulz, Andrew, and Campbell, Tom. Student Division 2 Singles – Jacka, Joseph. Under 20 Singles – Schulz, Andrew.

The season was closed by Caltowie capitalising on their 2018 form by beating Belalie East to win the A grade shield. Belman and Uniting Church contested the B grade shield, with many close matches Uniting Church won the B grade shield. Congratulations to Caltowie and Uniting Church on winning the A and B Grade grand final. Thank you to Mal Harding on presenting the shields.

The Sports Person awards were held once again with players from each grade voting in their respective grades. Congratulations to Aryn Klingner and Joseph Jacka on winning the A and B Grade Sportspersons Award for 2018. The association would like to thank all players and supporters for the 2018 season. The 2019 season will commence in April.
