This year is the tenth year that the Rocky River’ Riters have conducted the Laura Literary Awards, a national competition for authors and poets from Junior Primary age to very senior. This local writer’s group is composed of about 20 people who enjoy the written word. Some members are serious authors, having produced historical publications, family histories and prize-winning plays. Others are less dedicated, enjoying the self-publication of stories and poems of a local nature.
Each year this group bands together with other members of local communities to co-ordinate the many entries received and to create judging panels to enjoy and assess the writings submitted. More than 200 entries are received in the various categories, making the judges job quite demanding.
Rocky River ‘Riters took on the challenge of conducting this competition in 2009 to encourage and promote writing within this area and we look forward to receiving many local entries from schools and older writers. There is no entry fee for Young Adult or Junior authors. Open poetry and prose has a fee of $10 and a prize of $200, while Young Adult sections have a prize of $50, Primary-$25 and Junior Primary-$15. Prize money for the prose categories is generously donated by The Flinders News which has been a staunch supporter of the awards for many years.
Work produced for school assignments can be entered or pieces written specifically for the literary competition. There is no restriction on topics, but there are various word limits for the different categories. Entry forms with all the specific conditions can be found at rockyriverriters.club
