The Melrose Easter Tennis Tournament will celebrate its 75th consecutive year.
The rich history of the event stretches back to its first held in March 1937. During World War II, tournaments weren't held in 1940 or 1943. The competition has been held yearly since 1944.
President of Melrose Tennis Club, Matthew Blieschke, said an 11 event programme was on offer this year.
"It is a very well supported tournament, with players returning year after year and really who wouldn't - we have a perfect setting with our tennis courts at the foot of Mount Remarkable," he said.
This year's programme includes:
- Men's Championship Singles and Doubles
- Women's Championship Singles and Doubles
- Men's and Women's Handicap Doubles
- Mixed Handicap Doubles
- Mixed 45 years and over Doubles
- Boys and Girls Championship Singles - aged 16 years and under
- Junior Foundation Cup - aged between 8 and 12 years
"This year due to Easter being in the school holidays we have the opportunity to run a 'Junior Tennis Tournament' on the Thursday prior to the normal tournament," Matthew said.
"If there is enough interest it will run in a doubles round robin format."
The Melrose Tennis Club is a small club and have very few volunteers but each year they give their time up over Easter to make the tournament successful.
Melrose Tennis Club life member, Keith Blieschke, who was involved with the tournament for 40 years, said club members had made a lot of new friends with players and their families over the course of the tournament's history.
"Paul Horsman from Barmera is a regular face seen at the tournament attending for over 50 years, so hopefully he is returning this year," he said.
"Port Pirie tennis players have always supported our tournament well. Many players and their families have been returning for more than 30 years."
On Good Friday, they start with Mixed Doubles. On Easter Saturday they play Championship and Handicap Doubles and every year they work in with their players who like to attend the Clare Races. Easter Sunday they continue with events and start on semi-finals. On Easter Monday, finals are played and at the end there are trophy presentations.
Anyone requiring information on the tournament can keep up-to-date on the Melrose Easter Tennis Tournament Facebook page, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone the Tournament Committee, Cassie McCallum, on 0438 815 375. Entries for the Easter Tennis Tournament and the Junior Tournament close on April 12.
