A century is always a reason to celebrate in cricket and the Tumby Bay and District Cricket Association will mark a significant century as it celebrates 100 years of cricket in Tumby Bay. Starting Friday the association will hold a number of events to celebrate the centenary milestone, which includes special matches, a reunion dinner and unveiling the Team of the Century. Association president Mark Cameron said the centenary committee had been working to put the celebrations together over the past 12 months and everyone was excited for the weekend ahead. Festivities will begin on Friday with a twilight game which will see the association's junior team taking on their fathers, followed by a meet and greet. On Saturday the association will hold a Twenty20 finals double header at the Town Oval with Rovers taking on Lipson at 12 noon followed by Ramblers v Colts at 3pm. Later that evening the 100 year celebration dinner will be held at Tumby Bay Town Hall at 6pm for 170 people, which will include guests travelling from interstate. The dinner will include on the couch interviews, presentation of new association life members and the announcement of the Team of the Century, with 50 players from the past 100 years up for selection. Finally Sunday will be a wind up day with a six-a-side match featuring past players 40 years and older. The association will be celebrating its roots, which began in October 1921 when the competition began between clubs Lipson, Tumby Bay, Cummins, Yallunda Flat, Stokes and Salt Creek, playing for the Frearson Shield. There has been a lot of change to Tumby Bay cricket in the past 100 years, since 1997/98 it has seen four teams, Lipson and the Tumby Bay based teams Ramblers, Rovers and Colts compete for the A.T. Borthwick Shield. Mr Cameron said for an association the size of Tumby Bay's, reaching 100 years was a significant milestone and a testament to the work that goes into putting on a competition at junior and senior level. "The fact that this town can supply three cricket teams is amazing," he said. "We've got four pretty even sides and we will work to try to continue to have that." Mr Cameron said the association was proud to reach 100 years and was looking forward to many more years of success. Tumby Bay will also look forward to hosting the Henderson Shield final later in the year after earning a five-wicket win against Great Flinders on Saturday.
