The next phase of the year 7 transition to high school has begun with registrations opening to families to apply for their year 6 or 7 child to start high school in 2022.

In a first for South Australia, all public secondary schools will be taking enrolments for year 7 students for 2022.

The roll out is expected to mean about 30,000 students to begin in year 7 and 8 through this year's statewide transition process.

Education Minister John Gardner said the next stage of the statewide initiative should be a happy experience.

"This year is particularly exciting, as we are preparing for year 6 and 7 students to move to secondary school together at the end of this year.

"Secondary school offers a wide range of learning opportunities to meet the interests and talents of young people, and it's fantastic that year 7s will now be able to experience these opportunities earlier in their education.

He now encourages parents to contact their local secondary school to learn about what the school can offer their child.

Families can also apply for one of the four new secondary schools opening next year including Whyalla.

All year 6 and 7 public school families will receive a unique link by email or letter to access their child's online registration of interest form.

In this form parents will be able to nominate the public secondary school/s they would like their child to attend for 2022. Paper forms are also available.

Families currently attending a non-government school can also apply to attend a public secondary school in 2022.

They can get further information and a registration form from their local secondary school, education office or through the Department's website at education.sa.gov.au/enrolment.

Information videos are also available to help families complete their child's online registration form, which will be a first time experience for many parents.

Registrations will close Friday, May 21, 2021.

Families will receive an enrolment offer from their allocated secondary school by Friday, August 13, 2021.
